CHAPTER I

The Aurkhem

For a thousand years, Aurkhem stood unbroken.

Its walls were high, its ranks disciplined, its name spoken in neighboring lands the way men speak of winter. And now, with friction pressing along its borders, Aurkhem prepared the only way it knew how. More soldiers. More order. More certainty. The council called it strength.

They were wrong about what it was.

Three lives were already moving toward each other. None of them knew.

I.

the man in the desert

He had been walking for five days.

The city was behind him. He did not look back at it.

He did not know what was in the desert ahead of him, and for the first time in twenty-two years, he did not need to.

On the fifth night, with the moon very white and the sand finer than the sand of any place he had ever been, something glinted in the trough between two low dunes.

He knelt over it for a long time.

When he stood, he was wearing it.

And for the first time in his life, he felt like someone.

The Reckoning.
925 sterling silver. Black rhodium. 18k gold vermeil. Natural ruby.
Written before it was made.

II.

the woman with the sword

She stood at the highest window of the tower and watched her nation breathe beneath her.

She was not yet on the throne. But she would be.

She did not know this because anyone had told her. She knew it the way she knew the timing of a blade before it left a hand. She had been right about every blade so far.

The wind pulled at her hair. The small thing at her ear caught the morning light — a sword hilt rendered in silver and something older.

She had worn it through every battle that mattered. She could no longer remember when she had first put it on.

For three days, it had been warming on its own.

She touched it now without thinking.

Below her, a nation prepared for war.

And somewhere in the city she could not yet see, a man was sliding a ring onto his finger.

The Sovereign.
925 sterling silver. 18k gold vermeil sword-hilt. Lab grown ruby.
Written before it was made.

III.

the priestess in the temple

She woke from the vision gasping.

She had seen the tower fall. Not the way towers fall in war.

She had seen the stones above her head. She had felt the air change. And she had understood, in the way the temple had taught her to understand things, that what she had witnessed was not a place.

It was a nation.

She rose from the floor where she had fallen. The candles in her chamber still burned. The wind outside the temple walls still moved.

Aurkhem still stood.

For now.

She walked to the mirror.

Something at her chest caught the light.

The pendant.

The one that had hung against her skin since the day she was chosen. The one that had stayed dim through wars and famines and the deaths of three before her.

It was glowing.

Softly. Steadily. For the first time in a thousand years.

The Awakened.
925 sterling silver. 18k gold vermeil. Sapphire crystal. Laser-engraved lily.
Written before it was made.

Three lives. Three relics waking at once. None of them know the others exist. None of them know what they have just set in motion.

But the ring has been worn. The earring has been touched. The lily has answered.

And somewhere beneath the streets of Aurkhem, something very old has just opened its eyes.
